A common misconception is the confusion between three optical phenomena: reflection, retroreflection, and photoluminescence. They each behave differently and serve a different purpose.
Ordinary reflection scatters light, so drivers receive only a fraction. Photoluminescence stores and slowly releases light as a faint glow, useful for emergency markings, not roadside detection at speed.
Retroreflection is critical. It reflects light incoming directly back to its source. The vest instantly reflects that illumination back to the driver; there is no scattering, no delay, just an immediate bright return of that light.
Fluorescent Colors for Daytime Contrast
While reflective tape relies on an external light source to be effective, fluorescent fabrics absorb ultraviolet (UV) radiation—the part of sunlight that is invisible to our eyes—and re-radiate it as visible light with longer wavelengths. Unlike more traditional materials that merely reflect available light, a fluorescent safety vest converts additional otherwise unused UV energy into visible-light output to make the wearer appear brighter during daytime hours.
Fluorescent yellow-green and fluorescent orange-red are the two most commonly used colors in high visibility apparel. And both colors are on the far end of the light spectrum to which our eyes are extremely sensitive — this enables them to catch the eye before a normal color would. Moreover, these fluorescent pigments have been reported to convert UV energy more effectively into visible light. Fluorescent yellow-green offers exceptional contrast against asphalt roads, concrete surfaces and the darker color palettes normally seen in industrial facilities. Class 2 safety vests are designed for construction sites, utility work, and urban road projects, requiring greater reflective coverage and 360-degree visibility. For high-risk environments such as highway construction, traffic control, and emergency response operations, Class 3 safety vests provide the highest level of protection. These garments include reflective materials on both the torso and sleeves, helping drivers recognize a complete human silhouette from a greater distance and at higher speeds. Washing and Care Guidelines
