Why Is Washing Testing Important for Reflective Fabric?
Reflective fabric is commonly used on safety vests, workwear, uniforms, outdoor clothing and other high-visibility garments. During daily use, these garments may experience repeated washing, detergent exposure, mechanical agitation, drying and friction.
These conditions can affect the reflective layer and may lead to:
- A decrease in retroreflective coefficient

- Peeling or cracking of the reflective layer

International textile testing practices provide standardized washing and drying procedures for evaluating textile materials. ISO 6330:2021, for example, specifies domestic washing and drying procedures for textile testing, including different washing machine types, washing procedures and drying methods.
For high-visibility clothing, standards such as EN ISO 20471 also consider the retroreflective performance of reflective materials after specified test exposures.
For this reason, wash testing is not simply about checking whether a fabric can survive a washing machine. It is about determining whether the reflective performance can remain stable after repeated care cycles.
YGM Reflective Fabric Washing Test Process
YGM’s quality control process starts with representative sampling from the finished production batch.

After a batch of reflective fabric is produced, YGM quality control personnel randomly select representative samples for testing. Taking H001-GS reflective fabric as an example, the selected sample is sewn together with a benchmark material and clearly labeled with the product model, batch information and washing requirements to ensure full test traceability. Before washing, the sample is tested with a photometric measuring instrument to record its initial retroreflective coefficient as a performance baseline.
The prepared samples are then placed in an automatic washing machine under controlled conditions based on the applicable testing requirements, product specifications or customer requirements. Washing procedures can be carried out with reference to relevant textile testing standards such as ISO 6330:2021, while the required number of washing cycles depends on the specific product or application. This process is designed to simulate repeated washing conditions that reflective materials may experience during the service life of safety clothing and workwear.
After the required washing cycles are completed, YGM measures the retroreflective coefficient again and compares the post-wash results with the initial data to evaluate reflective performance retention and wash durability. At the same time, the surface of the sample is visually inspected for peeling, cracking, wrinkling, abrasion, delamination or other visible damage. By combining photometric measurement with visual inspection, YGM can comprehensively evaluate the washing durability and performance stability of reflective fabric.
This combination of instrumental measurement + visual inspection provides a more comprehensive evaluation of wash durability.A material may retain a certain level of retroreflective performance while showing visible surface damage, so both aspects are important when evaluating reflective fabric for practical applications.
