To understand reflective material in detail, take a few minutes to go through our comprehensive FAQ guide about all aspects of it including main types, quality control, packaging, how to order, and much more.

Scroll away to begin.

What Is Reflective Material? What are the different types of reflective materials? How Does It Work?

Reflective material works on the basis of the ‘retroreflection theory’. In this principle, the incident light reflects the light back from the reflective surface sans any scattering at all. That’s how it permits the person at the light source to see anyone wearing the reflective fabric.

To explain more, the reflective fabric of any type mostly consists of a layer coated with glass beads that aid in the reflection of light without scattering. Most of the reflective materials also come with an aluminum backing to enhance the reflectivity of the glass beads, especially in low-vis conditions.

At YGM, we have one of the largest varieties of reflective materials. Here’s the long list of all types of reflective material you need to know about:

  • Reflective tape: This is the biggest category of reflective material and you have a wide variety of options to pick from. The best thing is reflective tapes come with adhesion that makes them easy to use and customize too. From silver to high-reflective, ordinary reflective, flame retardant, elastic, PVC, and luminous, there are many options of reflective tape for clothing to pick from. Note that double color, advertisement-grade, engineering-grade, high-intensity and similar reflective tapes are used for vehicles.
  • Reflective fabric: If you’re thinking of sew-on reflective, there are many options too such as holographic, silver, rainbow, iridescent, print reflective, bronzed reflective, gradient, and even fabric tape. You can also find reflective piping for sew-on applications easily too.
  • Reflective HTV: A type of reflective material that’s applied on apparel, accessories, and so on using heat transfer vinyl. Reflective HTV is mostly available in multi-colored variants as well as high-colors, rainbow, and segmented options.

Apart from the above, there are many other characteristic differences between reflective materials such as their reflectivity ranges, operating temperatures, color options, backing fabric, and even application.

The good news is when you work directly with a manufacturer like YGM, you can customize reflective materials without breaking the bank or paying huge commissions to the middleman.

What Are The Uses Of Reflective Material?

Reflective material is a multi-faceted material with many widespread applications. They are easy to stick on materials like clothes, bags, shoes, and more besides resisting wear and tear from harsh weather.

Take a look at the following list to know more about it:

  • Safety: The primary application of reflective materials is for protecting workers and staff in low-visibility conditions such as harsh weather, distances, and night shifts.
  • Fashion: Today reflective fabric is popularly used by fashion moguls for creating unique looks with iridescent and rainbow reflective fabric.
  • Advertising: You can also use reflective material to add more focus to your ad banners by cutting it in the shape of your brand logo, motto, and so on.
  • Traffic: Reflective material is a great way to make road traffic signs and symbols appear to nighttime drivers as well as pertaining to low-visibility conditions.
  • Activewear: For runners, cyclists, and athletes who find safety important, reflective fabric strips on their athletic wear can keep them away from road accidents.
  • Construction: Workers in construction-related fields find it useful to wear reflective material on the site to ensure they don’t add to accidents.
  • Shopping center: Reflective tape is excellent for dividing huge areas into different zones.
  • Roads: Just like for shopping centers, you can use reflective tapes to mark different areas clearly even for nighttime use.

Automobiles and boats: It’s easy to stick a strip of tape made from reflective material on your automobile or boats to prevent accidents from other automobiles and boats.

What Are The Main Materials Used By YGM To Create Reflective materials?

There are many things used to create reflective materials like tapes, fabric, piping, heat transfer vinyl, and so on. Basically, the initial layer is applied for protection from depreciation. The good part is it also improves the life span of the reflective material. Next, we add a layer of resin that enhances the reflectivity of the material.

The next layer contains glass beads in micro sizes to ensure reflectivity of light with zero scattering. The last layer is a protective lining paper that you can remove during application.

You might even see another layer between glass beads and the protective lining in certain types of reflective materials. That being said, HTV reflective materials use the elastic part called TPU. The initial layer is made of polyester or spandex backing fabric and next is the adhesive substance that keeps the reflective sheet crip on the fabric.

Finally, aluminum reflectors with glass beads add the finishing touches to your high-quality reflective fabric to reflect light in low-visibility conditions without any hassles.

What Are The Chief Quality Control Measures And Standards Used By YGM When It Comes To Reflective material?

There are different quality control process for different types of reflective material.

QC Process For Reflective Tape for Vehicles

  • Confirming the Reflectivity of the material

In this QC test, the reflective quotient of the material you ordered is confirmed. This is done using an instrument that gauges the inverse reflection coefficient with respect to the color, backing fabric, construction, and type of reflective material you’ve chosen.

It is then adjusted to a voltage of 5.5V and the instrument is further calibrated using a 3M reflective material to ensure it attains reflectivity between 520±5 cd/lx/m² before checking for reflectivity.

  • Checking the Release Force

The next part of the QC test of reflective fabric includes assessment of the peeling factor. The strength of peeling is also confirmed using a machine that tests for the release force of the reflective material at an angle of 90-degrees and peeling at a speed of 300 mm per minute to test the ideal release force.

Release Force Test of Reflective Material
  • Assessing the Initial Adhesion

The strength of adhesion of reflective tapes are generally ensured with a tensile testing machine to be higher than 5N. The process is quite simple and begins with a sample test where a small cut-out from the reflective material of dimensions 2.5 cm x 30 cm is taken.

After peeling off the addition tape at the edges, the sample is bent or flexed in exact half before being placed on a tension clamp with the adhesive surface facing downward. The machine gets lowered further and then propped up by the machine at a higher level to assess its test valves in conclusion.

QC Process for Reflective Tape for Clothing

  • Inverse Reflection Coefficient is determined.

Washing performance according to ISO 6330, ISO 15797, and ISO 3175.

Wash Test of Reflective Material
  • Glass beads are tested by rubbing hands on it to identify damages and defects.
  • Surface check looks for blemishes and defects on the surface of the reflective fabric.
  • Flame resistance is identified for flame retardant tapes.
